Common problems and how to solve them.

Getting started

Can I use it with iPad?

Tonari is another screen made for iPhone. iPad isn’t supported. To use an iPad as a display for your Mac, you can use Sidecar in macOS. Tonari is not an Apple product (Terms of Use).

Tonari says it needs Screen Recording permission

Tonari needs Screen Recording permission to send your Mac’s screen to your iPhone.

  1. Open Tonari in the menu bar and click “Allow”.
  2. In System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Tonari.
  3. Click “Reopen Tonari” in Tonari. The permission takes effect after Tonari reopens.
macOS asks whether Tonari can find devices on the local network

Tonari uses this to connect to your iPhone nearby. Click Allow. If you don’t, your Mac won’t appear in the list on your iPhone. To change it later, turn on Tonari in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.

I can’t find the Tonari window

Tonari lives in the menu bar. Click the icon shaped like two screens at the top right of your screen. If your menu bar is crowded, the icon may be hidden. Remove some other icons, or hold down ⌘ and drag icons to rearrange them.

If you can’t connect

My Mac doesn’t appear in the list on my iPhone
  1. Make sure you’ve paired that Mac. Only Macs you’ve paired by scanning their QR code appear in the list (how to pair).
  2. Make sure “Accept Connections from iPhone” is on in Tonari on your Mac.
  3. Make sure your Mac and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi. Hotel, café, and guest Wi-Fi networks may block devices from talking to each other, so your Mac may not be found. If so, try Personal Hotspot on your iPhone.
  4. On your iPhone, make sure Local Network is on in Settings > Tonari. If it’s off, your iPhone can’t find your Mac (Tonari’s home screen also shows a notice).
  5. On your Mac, make sure Tonari is on in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
  6. If it still doesn’t appear, scan the QR code from “Add iPhone” on your Mac again. (This also fixes it when your Mac’s address has changed.)
The QR code won’t scan, or it says it couldn’t connect
  • Check that Tonari is allowed to use the camera in Settings > Tonari on your iPhone. If you’d rather not allow it, you can scan the code with the Camera app instead and pair after a confirmation.
  • If it says the QR code has expired, open “Add iPhone” on your Mac again and scan the QR code that’s shown now. A QR code works only while it’s open.
  • If it says it couldn’t reach your Mac, check that “Add iPhone” is open on your Mac, that both are on the same Wi-Fi, and that Local Network is on in Settings > Tonari on your iPhone. Also check “Firewall or VPN” below.
  • If it says this iPhone was unpaired, the pairing was removed on the Mac. To use it again, scan the Mac’s QR code again.
  • If it says it couldn’t connect because the QR code was replaced on the Mac or Tonari on the Mac seems to be out of date, update Tonari on your Mac and scan the QR code again. If it says the Mac’s QR code has changed, scan the QR code again as well.
  • If it says it couldn’t connect because the Mac couldn’t set up the display, open Tonari in your Mac’s menu bar, follow the reason and next step shown there, and then tap “Reconnect”.
I want to unpair an iPhone

In Tonari in your Mac’s menu bar, open Settings > Paired iPhones and click “Unpair” for the iPhone you want to remove. That iPhone can’t connect until it scans the QR code again. To remove all of them, click “Unpair All (New QR Code)” on the same page. On the iPhone side, you can remove a Mac in Settings > Paired Macs in Tonari.

I want to use it where there’s no Wi-Fi

Turn on Personal Hotspot on your iPhone and connect your Mac to that Wi-Fi. The steps are in the iPhone app under “Can’t Connect?” > “Connect with Personal Hotspot”.

Connecting over Personal Hotspot or with a cable is still being tested.

It stays on Connecting

The Mac app connects to only one iPhone at a time. While another iPhone is connected, yours waits. It connects once Tonari is closed on the other device.

If it still hasn’t connected after 15 seconds, your iPhone shows a list of things to check. Also try the steps in “My Mac doesn’t appear in the list on my iPhone” above.

I can’t connect to a paired Mac (firewall or VPN)

Also follow these steps if Tonari’s menu on your Mac says the firewall is blocking connections to Tonari.

  1. If the firewall is on in System Settings > Network > Firewall on your Mac, click Options. Turn off “Block all incoming connections”, and set Tonari in the list to “Allow incoming connections”. If macOS asks whether to allow incoming network connections the first time Tonari starts accepting connections, click Allow.
  2. If you use a VPN on your Mac or iPhone, turn off the VPN, or allow access to the local network in the VPN app.
  3. If you use security software, allow Tonari’s network traffic. To allow it by port, use TCP and UDP port 47123 (if that port isn’t available, Tonari switches to another one automatically).
My iPhone says the connection was ended

Someone clicked “Disconnect” in Tonari on the Mac. Your iPhone doesn’t reconnect on its own. To use it again, tap “Reconnect”.

While using Tonari

The video freezes, stutters, or lags
  1. If your iPhone says your Mac’s display is off, use your Mac to wake it.
  2. Set the quality to Data Saver (see “The video looks rough, or I want to use less data” below).
  3. Move your Mac and iPhone closer to the Wi-Fi router.
  4. Stop other large downloads.
  5. Tap “Disconnect” on your iPhone, then connect again.
Text on the Mac display is too small or too large

Choose a text size: Larger, Standard, or More Space. Your Mac’s resolution changes to match. On some iPhones, Larger and Standard turn out the same size (the app tells you when this happens).

  • Mac: Tonari in the menu bar > iPhone Display > Text Size
  • iPhone: Swipe down from the top to show the controls, then use Text & Quality
The video looks rough, or I want to use less data

Choose the quality: Data Saver (about 8 Mbps), Standard (about 20 Mbps), or High (about 35 Mbps). Change it in iPhone Display > Quality in Tonari on your Mac, or in Text & Quality in the controls on your iPhone.

I want my iPhone on the other side of my Mac

In Tonari on your Mac, go to iPhone Display > Position and choose Left or Right. The iPhone is placed beyond your leftmost (or rightmost) display, and on the same side the next time you connect. With Automatic, it stays where macOS placed it.

What happens to the Mac display when my iPhone disconnects?

After your iPhone disconnects, the display stays for a set time (30 seconds by default). If you reconnect within that time, your windows stay where they were. After that, the display is removed, and windows move back to your Mac’s screen.

My iPhone says the Mac’s display is off

When your Mac’s display turns off, your Mac goes to sleep, or you switch to another user, Tonari hides the picture on your iPhone so that the iPhone’s Auto-Lock can work. It comes back when you start using your Mac again.

If your Mac is locked while its display stays on, the picture may not be hidden. When you step away, close Tonari on your iPhone or lock your iPhone.

Some windows or videos don’t show on my iPhone

Apps that don’t allow screen capture and copy-protected videos may not appear on your iPhone. Move them back to your Mac’s screen to use them.

When you get a new iPhone or Mac
  • If your new iPhone asks you to pair your Mac, or to pair it again, scan the QR code from “Add iPhone” on your Mac again. You can remove the old iPhone’s pairings in Settings > Paired Macs in Tonari.
  • When you move to a new Mac, Tonari creates new pairing information, so scan the QR code again with your iPhone. Quit or delete Tonari on the old Mac.

Updating and deleting

How to update

When a new version is out, Tonari’s menu tells you so. Click “Update” to see what’s new before installing it. You can also check with Settings > Check Now in the menu.

After you update macOS

To create the screen shown on your iPhone (a virtual display), Tonari uses a part of macOS that isn’t publicly documented. Because of this, Tonari may stop working after a major macOS update.

  1. Update Tonari to the latest version with Settings > Check Now in Tonari’s menu.
  2. If you’re asked for Screen Recording permission, follow the steps in the menu to allow it again.
  3. Connect your iPhone and check that the screen appears.
  4. If it doesn’t, let us know with Settings > Report a Problem in Tonari, which attaches the logs. When we release a version that supports the new macOS, we’ll announce it in the Release Notes.
I want to delete Tonari
  1. Click “Quit Tonari” in the menu.
  2. Move Tonari from the Applications folder to the Trash.
  3. If you don’t need the logs (~/Library/Logs/Tonari) either, move them to the Trash too.
  4. The pairing key stays in your login keychain. If you don’t need it, delete dev.t984nscm2hk.tonari.mac.pairing in Keychain Access. The same goes for the settings (~/Library/Preferences/dev.t984nscm2hk.tonari.mac.plist).
  5. On your iPhone, delete Tonari. Information about paired Macs may remain in the iPhone’s keychain (it’s used if you reinstall Tonari).

Still need help?

With “Report a Problem” in the app, you can collect Tonari’s activity logs into a single file and attach it to an email to us. Nothing is sent automatically.

  • Mac: Tonari in the menu bar > Settings > Report a Problem > Create Email. If Tonari quit unexpectedly, the menu lets you know.
  • iPhone: Settings > Report a Problem in Tonari > Create Email or Share.
  • What’s included: Tonari’s logs (the 5 most recent files, which contain your Mac’s name, the model of the connected iPhone, network addresses, and connection records), Tonari’s crash reports, your device model and OS version, and Tonari’s settings. No screen images are included.

In your email, please describe what was shown, when it happened, and what you were doing at the time.

Before sending screenshots or logs, check that they don’t show anything you’d rather keep private. Never send passwords, such as your Apple Account password, or other credentials.
